Detailed checklist

Tips before you start

The checklist below may feel overwhelming but it doesn't all have to be done at once.

You can print the list (at the bottom of the page) and also share tasks with loved ones who would love to help but don't always know how.

You are also warmly welcome to contact Honra Livet for guidance and support along the way.

Think of it as a support over time, not a to-do list for a day.

Inform about the death

  • Next of kin must be informed as soon as possible after death
  • Home service
  • Family, friends, employers, colleagues and neighbours
  • Cleaning company
  • Email Contacts
  • Associations

Save and sort papers

  • Collect bills, contracts, and account statements in a folder or binder
  • Open mail coming to the dead and the estate
  • Posting mail to the person who has primary responsibility for the estate
  • Block direct mail that comes on the occasion of the death

Contact the bank

  • Contact the deceased's bank about bills and end direct debit
  • Write a power of attorney to the person (s) who will manage the finances of the estate
  • Resolving or overwriting mortgages
  • Closing the accounts of the deceased after the succession

Declaration

  • Declare the deceased's firm
  • Check that the Swedish Tax Agency has the correct address
  • Make an income tax return for the estate, the Swedish Tax Agency will send a form to the estate's address when the time comes

Mail and change of address

  • Report remittance to the person in charge of the estate
  • Notify or extend postage if mail continues to arrive to the deceased
  • Check that the Swedish Tax Agency has the correct address

Estate registration

Before probate

  • Decide whether to make the probate yourself or enlist professional help
  • Find out if the deceased had special requests about who should manage the probate
  • Find out if the deceased had written a will, last greetings or wishes
  • Make a division of property after the probate, if the deceased was cohabiting and not married
  • Write a deed of succession after the probate is completed, if there are several heirs

Submit the probate to the Swedish Tax Agency

  • Send the probate order to the Swedish Tax Agency when the probate is completed. Must be submitted no later than 4 months after death

Certificates, powers of attorney and allowances

Find out before planning a funeral

  • Order a death certificate with family history via Tax Information 0771-567 567 or through a funeral home
  • Obtain a certificate of guardianship if you are going to seek help from someone who is not included in the genealogy investigation
  • Write a power of attorney if one person will manage the estate when there are several estate owners
  • Find out if you are entitled to financial compensation from group life insurance through the deceased's employer
  • Find out if you are entitled to financial compensation from insurance
  • Find out if you are entitled to housing allowance or housing allowance from Försäkringskassan. You have to apply for it yourself.
  • Find out if you, as a pensioner, are entitled to a housing allowance for pensioners from the Pensions Authority. You have to apply for it yourself

  • Did the deceased have special requests for burial
  • Did the deceased want a grave, ash grave, or scatter the ashes in a memorial grove
  • Explore different options at funeral homes
  • Find out if there is any funeral insurance

Preparing for burial

  • Book transport if the funeral is to take place in another location
  • Design and order obituary
  • Choosing and booking officiant or priest
  • Selecting Swiping

  • Choosing and booking a place for burial in a church, chapel or other location
  • Make a decision on possible digital connection to the funeral ceremony

After the funeral

  • Ordering tombstone
  • The estate pays the funeral. Collect receipts for funeral expenses

Agreements and subscriptions

  • Unsubscribe from phone
  • Cancel or transfer contracts for electricity, garbage collection, internet, television, streaming services
  • Cancel or transfer home insurance and other insurance
  • Terminate or transfer any lease agreement
  • If the deceased had grave rights, transfer it to a living person

Social media accounts

  • Blog and personal pages on the internet

Membership

  • Associations
  • Membership in organizations
  • Bonus Membership

Proof of ownership and title deed

  • Change the title deed to another person if the deceased had real estate. Apply for title registration with Lantmäteriet
  • Change the certificate of ownership of the deceased's vehicle with the Swedish Transport Agency

Home and household

  • Take care of pets
  • If the deceased lived alone lower the heat in the dwelling
  • If the deceased lived alone empty the refrigerator, garbage and mailbox
  • Collect spare keys
  • If the deceased lived alone, prevent burglary, for example, with a timer for lighting
  • Cleaning and emptying the dwelling of the dead
  • If more people live at the address of the deceased, contact the landlord to write a new rental contract
  • Clean and empty the deceased's dwelling in preparation for the sale or termination of the lease
  • Contact insurance companies to terminate or move home insurance
  • Contact realtors to sell the deceased's property ahead of succession

Care and aids

  • Retrieve the deceased's belongings in hospital
  • Return aids and alarms
  • Leave leftover medicine in pharmacies

Other things to do

  • Move the incorrectly parked car
  • Cancellation of the deceased's ID card, passport and driver's license
  • Pick up submitted laundry and things on repair
  • See boat, holiday house, allotment
